Dear Members,

Tomorrow is the BIG BIKE Race, raising money for the Heart & Stroke Foundation http://www.heartandstroke.com. We are SHORT 12 riders for TOMORROW’S race vs the Baydogs TRI Club. We are doing this for a good cause, please ADD YOUR SUPPORT. WE NEED YOU.

The Race is at 7pm, at Georgian Downs Racetrack. Please arrive at 630, wearing Club Jerseys, or Blue shirts!

Click this link to join NOW: http://www.kintera.org/faf/search/searchTeamPart.asp?ievent=1006860&lis=1&kntae1006860=6C44B131B35A44819AF56B5466B678AF&team=5033277

We have also received a delivery date for our 2012 order of CLUB KIT. I have gone ahead and added all of the items to our online registration system. This includes up to date inventory levels. Once the kit is gone, it’s gone for the year. Please don’t hesitate, make your order early, to ensure you get the size you need.

You can order today, and your kit will be ready for pick up on June 22, or we’ll ship it to you the following week. If you have feedback or questions, don’t hesitate to reply back to this email.

Finally, We have some HUGE News in regards to our future direction:

The executive of BCC and Team BTG are stoked to share some exciting information with you.

Over the winter months we have been working together to develop innovative partnerships so we can achieve shared objectives and invest in the future of cycling in our community.

With a renewed vision and leadership, we are pleased to communicate that BCC and BTG are working together to integrate the two Clubs as one. While we continue to work on the timelines, this transition will be of great benefit to the cycling community in Simcoe County.

As you know, the focus for both clubs has been to increase youth participation, community awareness and cycling opportunities for all. By increasing awareness of the sport it is our objective to personify the health and character building attributes that cycling can bring in our community. We are building the culture of the sport through a structured approach, linking fitness, sportsmanship, discipline, fortitude, humility, leadership, and strength of character.

We also intend to provide awareness and support for cycling by helping local athletes’ progress through the sport of cycling from grassroots participation through to the elite level Provincially and Nationally.

Our efforts to date have resulted in being named the Ontario Cycling Associations first “Youth Certified Club” and the creation of Team Centurion Development Canada consisting of young riders from both clubs.

Over the season you’ll see the Blue / Red of Team CDC, Blue / Black of BTG, and the Blue / Yellow of BCC on the roads and trails together.

Scheduled club rides are posted online and members of both clubs are welcome to attend any or all, we really look forward to growing the size of our rides & events through this partnership.

If you have any input, comments, or questions, please don’t hesitate to contact myself, or Kelly-Anne. It’s going to be a great season, I look forward to seeing all of you on your bikes!

Yours in Sport,

Hey All.

I hope everyone has had a good spring, It seems we may now start to get the warmer temperatures.

Just a couple of things we need to touch on.

Our Tuesday Night road rides have started and they will continue to leave from Fred Grant till the end of May then they will separate.

There will be no Sunday Ride this week (APRIL 22, 2012) due to our Annual Road Cleanup which will be taking place along our adopted section of road on Ridge Road. It starts at 10 and We can park our vehicle’s at the corner of 5/6 and Ridge Road. We hope to see every single member out cleaning the road with us.

We are still looking for riders for the Big Bike ride for Heart and Stroke on May 10th. We have been Challenged by the Barrie Baydogs Triathlon club. I hope everyone heard that “CHALLENGED”. We can’t let them beat us, plus its also for charity. We need 29 Riders in total.

I think we have 2 so far, so here is the link to sign up http://www.kintera.org/faf/search/searchTeamPart.asp?ievent=1006860&lis=1&kntae1006860=6C44B131B35A44819AF56B5466B678AF&team=5033277

Are you finding it harder and harder to keep up with your race / training schedule? Do you still want to be involved with the cycling scene even though you can’t devote as many hours as you could when you had a bunch a free time? Are you planning on organizing a race? Are you part of a club? Then becoming a Road Commissaire might be for you.
The OCA will be holding courses in February and March to train new Commissaires in the road discipline. This two day course introduces you to the rules of the sport and how to effectively apply them in a race situation.

This knowledge is useful for anyone who:
• Races competitively

• Organizes road events

• Manages a team

• Helps run a club

• Coaches riders

• Is a parent of a developing rider

• Wants to become an official

If you want to become a Team Manager or a Race Director, this course is mandatory in order to receive the licence code necessary for those roles. Also, clubs that have trained Commissaires in their membership benefit immensely. For more details, please click on this link

2011 President’s Report

Welcome to the 2011 AGM and this year’s version of the President’s report.

2011 was a year of growth. Our Club grew larger, with the highest membership since it’s first year. Our youth race was larger than the year before, and went off without a hitch. Our cyclocross race nearly doubled in size, but also went off without a hitch. Thanks in large part to our friends from the City of Barrie. Our Monday night MTB rides had a lot more participants than in 2010 as well.

One thing we would have liked to see grow some more, is the club TT series, organized, and hosted by Mike & Judy Doble. Year over year numbers were pretty flat, though hosting our first Interclub TT on the new Ingram Rd. course did push our numbers higher than in years past.

Tuesday nights continue to be the most popular ride of the week, the dual start locations worked well this year, and our downtown ride leaders, Brad & Barb Watts worked all season to ensure that everyone enjoyed their time riding. Our learn to ride program was well attended, and a great success judging by the number of club rides attended by it’s graduates. Much thanks to Marc Brouillette for his time to lead the course.

The Club continues to be involved locally, participating as a member of Barrie’s Active Transportation Working Group. Recently planning has begun for Cycling Safety Week 2012. Plans will include a car free day downtown, and possibly the City will host a bike summit, lead by Share the Road Coalition leader, Eleanor McMahon.

The Club has also forged a partnership with the Town of Innisfil, and the Innisfil Rotary Club, and are helping to create and build a ‘Rotary Trail’ at the Innisfil Recreation Complex. It will include a multi-use trail, with XC MTB trails cut into some treed land at the complex.

In 2012, the Club will be offering expanded Learn to Ride programming, to be offered in the City of Barrie’s Spring/Summer leisure guide. We’ll be offering both learn to road, and learn to MTB programs, for youth & adults. In the spring, the Club cleaned and adopted a stretch of Ridge Road through the town of Shanty Bay. Following our clean-up, the County put a sign up, letting everyone know the Barrie Cycling Club is helping to keep the area clean. We look forward to the support of everyone, when it’s time to clean up again next spring. It took all of 2 hours to get it done this year.

Our interclub series with the Eagles, Mountainview and Owen Sound continues to be a great introduction to racing for many people. Next year we, along with Newmarket will work to add in a youth component for younger racers, who might like to become involved. The OCA is adding a skills component to the youth race series, it might be fun to add a skills component to one of the interclub races as well. This is something we’ll investigate and share with the club as details become available from the OCA.

One thing that never materialized in 2011, was a Club clothing order. We tried to get this off the ground a couple of times, but hadn’t seen enough interest to cover the minimum orders required by Sugoi. Some of you have placed an order, and left a deposit with me, I apologize it’s taken so long, but tonight I would like to Club to vote on whether they support the club investing some if it’s own money to ensure we meet Sugoi’s minimums. Provided that there is support, we’d like to place an order for January 2, 2012.

Looking towards next year, some things that I’d like to see us focus on are, expanding our Time Trial series. Perhaps partnering with the Barrie Baydogs Tri club, could see us have a TT each week, and share the burden of organizing and hosting amongst other people. As with most club events, we have a core group of volunteers that enable these events to happen, we need to see more members offer to help, and volunteer through the year, in order to ensure we can continue to provide all the events and rides that we do.

I’d like to see the club support a women’s only weekly ride, lead and organized by women. I have heard many times this year from women, who would simply prefer to ride with other women, and no men. We have tried these in the past with mixed success, but I believe if we can provide a regular ride, and get the word out, it will be successful in 2012.

We’ve recently sat at a table with the man behind Centurion Cycling, and the Subaru Ironman Series. They have a long term goal of creating an all women’s ride, that would start & finish in Barrie, and have at least 1500 participants. We’d like to work collaboratively with them to see this become a reality.

We’ve also been working to develop a proper, five year strategic plan for the club, that covers all aspects of what we could, or would like to see accomplished in that time. It’s something that has been underway for several months, and we should have something to show everyone early in January. This represents a big step forward in the growth and development of the Barrie Cycling Club.

I’d also like to see us continue to grow our weekly MTB rides, and of course the more people riding on Tuesday nights, the better. Next year may see us realize the addition of a third ride, catering to more recreational riders, who just want to get out for a cruise with some friends. Definitely let us hear your thoughts on these things tonight through the course of our meeting.

The Club has already submitted an expression of interest form to the OCA for our youth race, which will hopefully be held on Saturday, May 21. We’ll also be submitting an expression of interest form to host another Ontario Cup Cyclocross race as well.

Thank you to all of you. Our members, and executive, who have made 2011 such a great year of growth. Now let’s get into the discussion of how we can make 2012 an even bigger, and better season!

————————————————————————————————–

Season Ending Supper & AGM.

Hello Members,

We’ve decided to change things up a bit this year, to combine the AGM, with our season ending supper. We felt this was the best way to share all of the Club’s accomplishments this year with as many people as possible, and also to make sure that everyone can have sufficient input into our direction for the year ahead.

We’ll be holding the Dinner/AGM at Liberty North, on Caplan Ave on Tuesday, December 6. We’ll try to get the dinner started for 6pm, the AGM portion around 7pm, and would hope to be finished up by shortly after 9pm. If you could please RSVP to let us know if you’re coming for the dinner & AGM, or just the AGM, that would be greatly appreciated!

RSVP to Robb at barriecycling.com

We will be sending out another email, with some executive position ‘job descriptions’, that will hopefully outline the types of things which need to be facilitated each year to remain a growing and successful club. Descriptions for President, Treasurer and Secretary are in the Bylaws section of the website here http://www.barriecycling.com/about-us/bcc-bylaws-constitution/ under section 4.

Here is the menu for our dinner, please let us know if you have concerns in advance.

cheers,

Hey everyone,

We’re close to being done the season, but we’ve got our 5th Annual Cyclocross race coming up on Sunday October 23, and we need your help!

We need your help to make sure this is a safe, and fun event for everyone.

The race is being held at the Barrie Sports Complex which is a premier sporting venue, on site features include a covered pavilion with heated washrooms, playground for the kids, fire pit, lots of parking. There will also be hot food and drinks on site with hot breakfast and lunch to help keep you warm.

Our enthusiastic and helpful City Staff have helped make this a great partnership!

The course has been laid out with speed and flow in mind, expect fast corners, every surface type imaginable, gravel, pavement, grass, and soil. One nice run-up per lap along with some tight turns to keep the course balanced.

We will need some help on the day before the race, Saturday October 22, to finish pounding in stakes, and taping the corners of the course. The design has been set, and we’ve got the supplies necessary already stocked, so it should be a smooth day.

Then, for the day of the race, we’ll need teams of volunteers onsite from 8am until about 3pm to ensure we put on a safe race, that’s fun for everyone. We’ll happy provide hot drinks for all of our volunteers, though if the weather stays like it has been, perhaps cold drinks will be more apropos!

Thanks for your help, see you on the 22nd & 23rd! Please let us know your availability by filling out this simple form. Click Here.

Hello Members,

Some info for you heading into September.

We have been given the date of Sept 7th to get our clothing order in, this was handed down by Sugoi. We are still short on orders mainly Shorts. If you are interested in shorts please contact robb@barriecycling.com and hopefully we can place an order this year. Or else we will need to wait until next year.

Time Trials: there are two more TT’s this year both at our new Ingram Road Course, Tonight is the final Club TT, with next week, September 8th (not two weeks) being the Interclub TT championships. Word is all three Club presidents will be racing.

Monday evening MTB rides will continue into the fall with lights.

Tuesdays: One group will be departing at 6:00 from Downtown, depending on interest the group could split into 2-3 groups once out of town. Rail trail rides will follow after the light gets too short.

Sundays will also continue on through the fall. Which could include some longer rides to Awenda, big chute etc if interest exists.

Still lots of time to register for the Centurion and ride for the simcoe county heart and stroke foundation http://www.active.com/donate/heartandstrokesimcoe which takes place on Sept 17/18th.

The junior/cadet cyclocross program has been put on hold and will be replaced with some open skills sessions. Open to any club member with a MTB/Cross bike. Details TBD.

Hello Members

Some more time sensitive material for you.

Our clothing order is not filling up as much as we need it to. To place orders with Sugoi we need two items (i.e. shorts and Jerseys) with 24 each. Then after that for other items we can order 12 each. i.e. Jackets Arm warmers etc.

We have not hit those minimums, the club is willing to order a couple extra pieces to fill in gaps, but we need a good deal more orders from club members. Another option would be to order from a different company with lower minimums, but pricing will go up and quality could go down to be honest. And this would take time to redo artwork get another fit kit etc..

We will keep the order open to see if we can get more orders.

The Tuesday evening rides are changing times to 6:00 pm starting next week. Allowing for more riding.

The final two time trials are also moving up to 6:30 with registration at 6:00. And yes the last time trial Sept 8th, will be an Interclub Time trial we will be hosting on our beautiful Ingram road course. The BCC has invited Mountainview and the Newmarket Eagles to a showdown. Cue epic showdown music.

The BCC has entered into a partnership with the Simcoe County Heart and Stroke foundation for the Centurion Canada event at Blue Mountain September 16-18. The price goes up on Monday so its a good time to enter. You can choose any of the events. I have attached the info poster to this e-mail. A great way for the club to raise funds and possibly start laying the groundwork for our own fundraising rides in the future.CENTURION POSTER

Cheers

Hello Club members,

I have managed to hack my way into the main page so this will be another way to pass along information. The executive would prefer to pass along information via the website as much as possible and keep the e-mails to a minimum and for more time sensitive or urgent info.

We encourage you to bookmark this main page and check back often.

The clothing fit kit will remain at the trek store downtown, available for members to try on sizing and leave a deposit cash or cheques accepted. Thank you to the trek store for the service to the club. The clothing order deadline is the end of this week, August 19.

Upcoming rides for the week are the regular Monday evening MTB ride at 6:30 this evening in Midhurst. The Tuesday evening rides at 6:30.

This is also TT week, out on the new buttery smooth and flat Ingram road course. Thursday (18th) first rider off at 7:00 p.m. be there early to warm up and sign up. This aids in the rider staging.

Here is a map with directions via HWY 400 from Barrie, it is a very quick drive and right off the highway.

And of course Sunday morning 9 am at Fred Grant Square.

The Barrie Cycling club will be introducing a Cadet/Junior fall cyclocross development program. The program will include three wedneday evenings skills sessions at Sunnidale park on Sept 7, 14, 21, followed by the 4 Wednesday evening Cyclocross races at Hardwood ski and Bike on Sept 28th, then Oct 5, 12 and 19th.

The program will conclude with two Southern Cup races held at the Barrie Sports complex on Oct 23, and Hardwood Ski and Bike on Oct 30th.

More info and registration details are available by e-mailing andrew@barriecycling.com

Food for thought section:

I often receive e-mails asking if the club offers more relaxed “touring” paced rides. There seems to be a lot of interest in, general speaking, slower, shorter, social type outings, most likely suited for Sundays or Saturdays. I can speak for the executives in saying we would love nothing more than to offer and support a ride like that. However we need a person or a small group of people to come forward to organize and run something like that.

With a growing club we are starting to come to our limits of what a very small group or volunteers can organize. If the club is to continue to grow we also need our volunteer, organizing committees, ride leader numbers to grow as well.

Cheers
BCC Executives

Hey everyone,

Tonight’s family ride is being cancelled due to the uncertain weather forecast, and also the fact there is a car show at the Heritage Park meeting place. Next week, we will return with a new meeting point, and the ride will be deemed a ‘club trial ride’ meaning that anyone is free to join us, all that will be required is that you first sign a waiver before participating!

Tomorrow night, we Christen our brand new Time Trial location on Ingram Rd.
This course is a full 7.5km in length, and features entirely brand new asphalt, just laid down this summer. It promises to be a very fast course. Don’t miss the opening event tomorrow, beginning at 7pm.

Some additional information from our Time Trial Coordinator, Mike Doble:
The start is on Ingram Road 1.5km east of Hwy 93, north of Craighurst. The TT goes east to turn at 7.5km and return to starting point. Parking will be on the eastbound shoulder of Ingram Road.

The course length has been independantly verified as correct to 15km by Jack Sasseville and Andrew Watson. Jack said he took a good 20sec off his best 15/16 time when he did a test last week.

Anyone riding to the start is best to go north on 93. The distance from Georgian Drive and Hwy 93 is 18.6km, which is just about 3km longer than to the 15/16 start.

Anyone driving from Barrie is best to go north on Hwy 400 and take the south bound exit at Hwy 93, then turn left approx. 200m south of the interchange.

As usual, sign on will open at 6.30pm, with first rider off at 7.01pm.

One final point to make; we would like to thank everyone who came out and participated in our spring road clean up day on Ridge Rd. this past Sunday. We have adopted the stretch of Ridge Road from Range Rd, to the 3rd line of Oro. Look for our signs the next time you’re riding out that way!!

See you on the road!

cheers,

Hello Members,

The Youth race is fast approaching, it is this Saturday. Our tireless organizers Cliff and Robb are still very much in need of more help on race day. Help would be greatly appreciated please call or email Cliff at home 705 728 9065 or email clifflilley@hotmail.com. The BCC has gained a wonderful reputation for our OCA sanctioned events since starting out with a Cross race in Sunnidale in 2007. We are one of the most well respected OCA event organizers out there.

This is one of two OCA sanctioned races our club puts on throughout the year and we would like to continue on doing even more races. However if we do not have enough volunteers we will need to cut back from doing these events in the future. Our club is shaped by our members, all you need to do is come out willing to help and Cliff will find something for you to do.

Also if you know of any High School students who need community service hours this does count towards that.

Ride safe

What a hectic week.

Yesterday the BCC hosted the first interclub race of the season. We saw about 50 racers come out on a beautiful sunny day. The race was won by our own Orrin Bowser, congratulations to him on a sandbag well played

We also had a great Sunday morning ride, lead by its weekly leader, Tony Miranda, care of the Trek Store Barrie! Tony will be at Fred Grant every Sunday morning at 9am, ready to lead you on a great, fun, social touring ride.

Tonight we’ve got the first of our weekly MTB rides kicking off. This year, we’re lucky enough to have Bikeland rider Linnley Clarke leading each & every Monday night ride. So you’ll always have a familiar face to greet you. The rides begin at 6:30 and leave from the Simcoe County Office building in Midhurst. The ride is a social ride, and you will not be dropped. If gaps appear, the lead riders will pause and wait for you to catch up! We look forward to seeing you there.

Tuesday will be the first of our dual Tuesday night group rides. We’ve also moved to our ‘summer’ timeslot, with both rides starting at 6:30pm. The downtown, Fred Grant Square ride is our social group ride. The Tuesday night social ride will be a fun ride for all. There will be no racing for sprint signs and every effort will be made to keep the group together. As the season progresses riders’ abilities increase so as time goes on the average speed will increase. If you haven’t been on a bike yet, and it’s July, email us before coming out.

The Sunnidale Park ride will feature higher speeds, sign sprints, and possibly some paceline riding. It’s geared towards the more serious & experienced cyclists, who are looking to get a little training in during the week, in addition to a social ride. All are welcome, but you may be dropped, so ensure that you are self sufficient in terms of routing & repairs at minimum.

This Thursday brings us the first of our venerable TT series. We will be riding on the Oro Course at the 7th line and 15/16. As in previous years, we must thank Mike & Judy Doble for taking on the chore of timing the TTs, and ensuring everyone gets away in a safe manner, without their dedication, we would not be able to offer the TT series. The weather looks good, we hope to see lots of you out, setting down a baseline time, so you can watch your fitness progress over the course of the season.

Upcoming events this month are the Youth Race on May 21. This will require some volunteer hours to clean the sand from the course, and we’ve also got to clean our adopted section of Ridge Road, through the town of Shanty Bay. Stay tuned for date announcements for each of these undertakings. Thankfully, with these behind us, the rest of the summer is all about riding.

cheers,
robb

The Barrie Cycling Club is excited to offer a 4 week, learn to ride in a group program beginning this Saturday, April 30 2011. The program is designed to help you build your confidence to a point that riding on the road is no longer scary, and riding in a group feels natural.

The learn to ride program will roll into a rider development course over the four sessions. Our mandate is to provide cyclists with the skills & experience so they can continue to improve their fitness levels and cycling abilities. Our club goal is to provide the knowledge & camaraderie for a healthy and fit cycling lifestyle whether it be for the beginner cyclist or competitive racer.

We’ll be hosting the event at St. Vincent Park beginning at 9:30am on Saturday April 30, Saturday May 7 & 14. Then we break for a week while we host our Youth Race, then the following week, on Saturday the 28th, we’ll have our final session which will focus on bike repair, and maintenance, to ensure you’re always riding a safe bike.

The learn to ride clinic is open to any Barrie Cycling Club member, and registration is available by emailing learn@barriecycling.com

See you on Saturday morning!
