1. Tuesday, June 24th- Summer Solstice Ride
This Tuesday’s Club ride will be the annual Summer Solstice Ride. The proposed route will be out through Midhurst to Old 2nd; continuing on the 2nd to Hillsdale; E on Mount St. Louis Road to the 6th; S on the 6th to Mill Pond Rd., then over to the 7th; S on 7th to Ridge Rd and home. The weather forecast is calling for a sunny evening so we should have plenty of light for this loop.
2. Thursday, June 26th- Club TT
This Thursday the TT will be on the Phelpston course starting at 7p.m. At the last TT we had a great turnout of 20 riders. Lets continue to build on those numbers.
3. Sunday, June 29th- Around the Lake Ride
Depending on interest and the weather forecast, the Club has planned an epic ride around Lake Simcoe for Sunday morning. The ride would leave from Fred Grant Square at 8 a.m and the total distance would be approximately 200km’s. Any riders wishing to join in for part of the ride are welcome. We will canvas the riders at the Tuesday night ride to determine interest. If you are unable to ride on Tuesday but are interested in the Sunday ride please send me an e-mail (dave@barriecycling.com)to confirm.

Welcome to the 2008 season of the BCC. I hope everyone had a great holiday season and are now faithfully getting in their training time in preparation for the start of the ride season.
There are a number of things to update the membership on since the end of the riding season.

1.	BCC AGM
The BCC AGM was held on Dec.13/07 at the Midhurst Community Centre. Club elections were conducted at that time and as a result the executive is composed as follows:

President- Dave Fabbro
Treasurer- Orrin Bowser
Race Director- Mike Doble
Secretary- Robb Meier
Director of Communication- Don Gain

Year end reports were presented at that time by members of the 2007 executive. For those unable to attend the AGM, I have included the President’s Report which summarizes a number of highlights of our 2007 season.

2.	OCA 2008 Club Affiliation
If any club member is taking out a race licence issued by the OCA, and intends to race under the BCC colours, please insure that the BCC is shown on your application in the appropriate spot.

3.	2008 Membership Information:
The 2008 membership forms are now up on the website. Please look at the Membership Information Page to download the forms. As in the past they can be mailed to the club PO Box or dropped off at The Trek Store or Bikeland in Barrie. Membership fees have remained the same this year with the exception of Junior fees. In an effort to increase our youth membership we have reduced the Junior fee to $26. Also, if the Junior has a UCI/Citizen Permit the club fee is reduced to $0. For full details refer to the Membership page.

4.	BCC Club Clothing:
We have an inventory of BCC clothing that is available for purchase
at very attractive pricing. The following are the prices and availability:

LS Jersey- $68 ( Med/Lrg )
SS Jersey- $60 ( Sm/Med/Lrg/XL/XXL )
Bib Shorts- $80 ( Med/Lrg )
Non-Bib- $63 ( xs/Med )
Vests- $50 ( Lrg/XL )
Jackets- $75 ( Med/Lrg/XL/XXL )
Socks- $9

Please send Dave an e-mail if you are interested in clothing.

5.	BCC Ski Days:
We will once again be doing a couple of Nordic ski days at Hardwood Hills. There will be a specially priced trail ticket of $17 and for those needing rentals they will be half price. There are plenty of classic rentals, however if you are interested in skating it will be a good idea to call ahead and reserve as there are limited numbers available. Call Dave at Hardwood Hills to make these arrangements.
The 2 days that we will be doing this are:
Sunday- January 27th;
Sunday- February 24th

Cross Racing Returns to Barrie:

On Sunday, November 4th, the Barrie Cycling Club held its 1st Annual Sunnidale Park Cross Race under mostly overcast skies in Barrie. However, the weather held for the day and 130 racers and numerous spectators were treated to a fast and exciting day of racing.
The 2.5km course had a mix of everything, including: hard-packed fast double track, grassy sections, the switchback descent leading to the stair run-up, quickly followed by the “corkscrew”section.

Judging from feedback received from all participants, the course was a hit and one of the best of the year. The numerous vantage points made for great viewing of the entire course. Sunnidale Park turned out to be a spectacular setting for fall cyclo-cross racing. The terrain was perfect and having access to the Dorion Parker Centre made our job that much easier in hosting this event. I have already sent a big thank you to the City of Barrie for allowing us access to this venue. Hopefully we will be able to continue to use it in the future.

In the Senior Men’s field, our own Andrew Watson, riding for the Barrie Cycling Club, took a well deserved and dominating win on his home course. He was followed by Peter Morse ( Jet-Fuel Coffee) in 2nd and Kyle Douglas (3 Rox racing) in 3rd. Even more amazing is that Andrew was out at 6a.m. Sunday morning helping us to set up the course.

In Senior Women, Jill Vale (Coach Chris) took the win followed by Sue Trimble Haviland (Norco) in 2nd and Christina Bouchard in 3rd.
Also, Mitch Bailey took the win in Junior Men. For full results please go to The Ontario Cycling Website.

In case you’re not sure what Cyclo-cross is all about, here’s a definition:
It’s a short-circuit multiple lap race lasting one hour-plus-one-lap [or less] over a variety of terrain including, but not limited to, grass, dirt and singletrack. Courses are designed to for riders to dismount and run [over obstacles, etc.] at least twice per lap [and up to four times]. Courses are usually 2.5-4 km in length. cyclo-cross is raced in the fall and winter, when conditions are typically very bad. It evolved out of a winter training regimen for road racers that emerged in the low countries and northern france after the second world war. the best way to describe it is a steeplechase for bikes.

We are extremely excited to bring this kind of racing right into the city of Barrie, we look forward to seeing many of you there on November 4th!

Our final club race of the summer season is the hill climb at 10.00am on Saturday, September 22nd at Moonstone.

The course will start at the Moonstone ski hill parking lot (same as the Interclub race) go up Mount St. Louis hill but instead of going to the top, you will turn on the 5th which kicks up again. I have to measure it but it should be around 2.5km.

The championship will be done as a time trial but I’m thinking that to make it worthwhile coming out we could follow it up with a mass start race over the same course as a handicap start. The slowest rider from the TT climb would go first, then the next slowest through to the fastest off last, all separated by the TT time differences. The theory being that you all come across the line together, causing a judging nightmare.

I have measured the hill climb course and have 2.7km from the start at the entrance to the Moonstone parking lot up Mount St. Louis Road then right to the crest of the hill on Line 5.

The first stage will be the time trial with the first rider off at 10.00am then 30 sec intervals. The time differences between riders will become the handicap start for the second stage. Slowest rider off first through to the fastest. The first over the line is the winner of the second event.

The championship will be decided by points awarded for your position in both stages. To avoid the incredibly remote possibility of someone “sandbagging” it in the time trial for a head start in the second stage, points will be weighted towards the time trial performance and less points for the handicapped mass start. The combined total points will decide the champions in the various age groups, both male and female.

Please arrive by around 9.30am to sign on (no entry fee) so we can start on time at 10.00am. The second stage will start as soon after we get the start order sorted out.

FIRST CLUB TIME TRIAL 15KM - THURSDAY MAY 10.

The 2007 time trial series kicks off on Thursday May 10 on the 15/16 road in Oro and will run throughout the summer on alternate Thursdays until the end of August.

LOCATION: Oro Fairgrounds, on 15/16, 300 metres east of Line 7. There is ample parking right beside the start/finish line. Do not park in the maintenence yard off Line 7.

COURSE: All on 15/16. Go east for 7.5km to turn between Lines 12 and 13, retrace to the finish.

TIME: First rider off is at 7.01pm. Please arrive around 6.30pm to register, then warm up.

ENTRY FEE: This is $3.00, which goes into a pot that pays for an end of season “pasta feast” at Boston Pizza, similar to last year.

RULES: Riders will start at one minute intervals. No pacing allowed, so no drafting behind another rider or the occasional tractor. All competitors must be a member of the Barrie Cycling Club.

TT EQUIPMENT: All bikes are allowed, from mountain bikes through to top of the line aerodynamic TT machines and recumbents. We will recognize the style of bike when the results are posted.

TROPHIES: will be awarded at the end of the season to age categories.

VOLUNTEERS: It takes three people to run these events, a timer, a holder and a turn marshall. Each rider must be available to be a volunteer at one TT during the season.

Time trials are a great way to improve speed and overall fitness. They do tend to hurt but the pain will only last for 20 minutes or so. It’s great training.

Check the on-line race schedule for the full list of events, which includes four 40km 2 up team time trials on Saturday mornings.

Hello, just a reminder that we are riding out of Sunnidale park on Tuesday evenings at 6:30 from now until the end of August.

If the weather is nice (which is iffy right now) we are expecting a large turnout of members for the ride. We ask that if you still need to sign up with the club that you arrive at 6:15 with the required forms completed and money.

If you still need to pick up your membership card please be there no later than 6:20, Plus its always nice to get there a little early to socialize.

At 6:25 we would like to be splitting into the two groups, A’s and B’s.

Wheels are rolling at 6:30 for the A ride and 6:31 for the B ride.

If there is a large A group (20+ ish) then the ride will be split for the first few km’s of the ride until it is well out of town, at which time it will come back together and carry on for a jolly good time. Expected distance will be between 55- 65 km. This ride does not have a designated ride leader or route, but there will be plenty of experienced riders that will be keeping things in line.

The B ride has a designated route and a ride leader, please see the forum section under “rides and outings” for further details. Or email me at andrew@barriecycling.com
